Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns Two Years Before Term Ends

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on Friday, stepping down nearly two years before the end of his five-year term and triggering a constitutional transition in the country.

The 76-year-old leader said he was resigning due to multiple health complications, according to Bangladesh's The Daily Star. His decision brings an early end to a tenure that began in April 2023.

Officials at Bangabhaban, the presidential residence, confirmed that Shahabuddin's representatives had left for Parliament with his resignation letter. Under the Bangladesh Constitution, Parliament Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed will assume the role of Acting President until a new President is elected.

A spokesperson for Bangabhaban said no official statement would be issued until the Speaker formally received the resignation letter.

While Shahabuddin cited health reasons for his resignation, the development comes amid media speculation that the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was uncomfortable with the largely ceremonial head of state. There has been no official confirmation supporting these reports.

A 1971 Liberation War veteran and former lower judiciary judge, Shahabuddin took oath as Bangladesh's President in April 2023 after being elected by the previous Parliament.

He remained the only senior constitutional office-holder from the previous political establishment after the student-led protests of July-August 2024 that toppled the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024, where she has remained since. Despite the dramatic political transition that followed, Shahabuddin continued in office until his resignation, making his departure another significant milestone in Bangladesh's evolving political landscape.

With the presidency now vacant, the focus shifts to the election of a new President, while the Speaker takes charge as Acting President to ensure continuity under the country's constitutional framework.
