Bangladesh Floods Kill 44 as 2.67 Lakh Families Are Displaced, Dhaka Submerged

Bangladesh floods have claimed 44 lives in the past week, while 2.67 lakh families have been marooned and over 10 lakh people affected as relentless monsoon rains, overflowing rivers and landslides continue to batter the country. The crisis has also submerged large parts of Dhaka , prompting the deployment of the Army, Navy and Air Force for rescue and relief operations in seven of the worst-hit districts.

A Disaster Management Ministry spokesperson said 44 flood related deaths had been officially recorded between July 5 and July 11 , with most victims drowning or being swept away by floodwaters, while others died in landslides. Officials said the deluge has affected 2,67,918 families , while 44,457 displaced people have taken shelter in more than 1,100 temporary relief centres . Reports indicate more than 10 lakh people have been impacted across 58 upazilas in districts including Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar and Habiganj .

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said seven of 45 river monitoring stations in the Meghna and South Eastern Hill basins remain above the danger level. It warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours in Sylhet, Rangpur and Mymensingh , along with adjoining Indian states of Meghalaya, Assam and West Bengal , could worsen flooding and push more rivers above danger marks.

Since Friday, Bangladesh has mobilised the armed forces to deliver food, drinking water and medical supplies to stranded communities. Many residents remain trapped on rooftops or roadside shelters as inundated health facilities and damaged roads hamper relief efforts.

The emergency has also intensified in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, where seven children and a teacher were killed in a landslide on July 8, while subsequent reports said the overall weather-related death toll in the camps has risen to 16 refugees .

Meanwhile, Dhaka recorded 76 mm of rainfall between midnight and 6 am on Sunday, overwhelming the capital's drainage system and flooding roads, homes and neighbourhoods. Similar conditions were reported in Chattogram , where heavy rain stranded vehicles and disrupted normal life. Bangladesh, a deltaic nation crisscrossed by 1,415 rivers , experiences seasonal monsoon flooding, but authorities warn the current situation could deteriorate further as rivers continue to rise.
