Bangladesh envoy extends Makar Sankranti greetings amid minority concerns

Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi, Riaz Hamidullah , on Wednesday extended warm greetings to Hindus in both India and Bangladesh on the occasion of Makar Sankranti , wishing that the light of the sun illuminate every life. Posting on his X handle in Bengali and Hindi , he shared photos of colourful pinwheels and festive sweets, adding: “Happy Makar Sankranti to all #Hindu brothers and sisters in #Bangladesh #Bharat! Let every family celebrate the festival of pinwheels and kites! @MEAIndia #Bangladesh #India.”

The envoy’s carefully worded message follows a pattern of similar festival greetings in previous years, where he has acknowledged Hindu celebrations such as Diwali and Kali Puja , addressing “Hindu brothers and sisters” across both countries. These messages have historically been intended to foster goodwill and emphasize cultural ties between the communities on both sides of the border.

This year, the greeting assumes added significance in the backdrop of recent attacks on minorities , including Hindus , in Bangladesh. India has repeatedly expressed concern over the safety of minority communities, and the envoy’s public outreach highlights both a diplomatic gesture and a message of inclusivity.

Makar Sankranti, a mid-winter harvest festival , marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makar) and is celebrated with kite flying, sweets, and family gatherings across India and Bangladesh.
