Bangladesh Cricketers Call Off Boycott, BPL Matches Resume

Bangladesh’s senior cricketers ended their brief boycott on Friday, agreeing to resume play in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 after a consensus was reached between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) .

The stand-off began on Thursday when BCB director Najmul Islam made controversial remarks questioning players’ performances and remuneration. He stated that cricketers would not be compensated if Bangladesh withdrew from next month’s T20 World Cup in India , as the players had yet to justify the support provided by the board, citing their lack of ICC tournament wins. The comments drew sharp criticism from senior players, who demanded Najmul’s immediate removal from his post.

In response, the BCB acted swiftly and removed Najmul from the finance committee , a move that helped ease tensions. Speaking at a late-night press conference on Thursday, CWAB president Mohammad Mithun said, “Keeping the greater interest of cricket in mind, we will resume playing tomorrow. We had to compromise on some things, but the board has assured us that our demands will be addressed as soon as possible.” BCB director Iftekhar Rahman was present alongside Mithun during the announcement.

As a result, the two BPL matches that had been postponed on Thursdayb Chattogram Royals vs Noakhali Express and Rajshahi Warriors vs Sylhet Titans resumed on Friday, with the Royals-Express match currently in progress.

The broader conflict stems from Bangladesh’s decision to refuse a tour of India for the T20 World Cup due to security concerns , including the exclusion of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL under unspecified circumstances. The BCB is reportedly in ongoing talks with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to explore alternatives, after the ICC showed reluctance to move Bangladesh’s four scheduled games in India to Sri Lanka.

The swift resolution highlights the importance of dialogue between players and administrators, as well as the significance of maintaining harmony ahead of a major international tournament. Analysts say the compromise ensures the BPL, Bangladesh’s premier T20 league, can continue without further disruption.
