At least eight people were killed and more than 20 injured after a cargo train crashed into a public bus at a railway crossing in central Bangkok on Saturday, Thai authorities said.

The accident occurred late in the afternoon near an airport railway station in the Thai capital. According to the city’s emergency response agency, the Erawan Medical Centre , all the victims found so far were inside the bus, though officials said the exact number of passengers on board remains unclear.

Videos circulating on social media showed a line of vehicles waiting at the crossing when the cargo train slammed into an orange public bus. The impact dragged several nearby vehicles along the tracks before the bus burst into flames. Several motorcycles and riders were also thrown onto the road during the collision.

Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat , who visited the scene, said authorities are investigating reports that the bus may have stopped on the tracks and whether the crossing barriers failed to lower properly before the train arrived.

“We still need to investigate the matter,” Siripong told reporters.

Eyewitness Kittipong Raksa said he had parked his car near the railway crossing after hearing the warning signal for an approaching train.

“I heard a thud and then another. I heard something hitting my car,” he said. “Then I saw the train pass, dragging the bus with it.”

Kittipong said he later discovered an injured person trapped under his vehicle with a broken leg. He also claimed he did not see the railway barriers being lowered before the crash.

Later footage from the scene showed rescuers entering the charred remains of the bus after firefighters brought the blaze under control.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
