Balka Suman Arrested Over Controversial Singareni Remarks, Political Storm Erupts
A major political controversy erupted in Telangana after BRS leader and former MP Balka Suman was arrested over remarks allegedly encouraging violence and damage to public property during a meeting linked to Singareni workers' union politics.
The arrest has further escalated tensions between the ruling Congress government and the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) , with both sides trading accusations over the incident.
The controversy stems from an internal meeting organised to strengthen the Telangana Boggugani Karmika Sangham (TBGKS) , the workers’ union affiliated with the BRS in the Singareni coal belt. Addressing union members, Balka Suman argued that merely delivering speeches would not be enough to restore the organisation’s former influence and called for a more aggressive approach in pursuing workers’ issues.
During his speech, he reportedly stated that activists should be prepared to organise programmes in the Mandamarri region and, if necessary, even go to the extent of setting fire to the office of a Singareni General Manager (GM) . He also said that union leaders should be willing to face imprisonment while fighting for workers’ rights.
Videos of the speech quickly circulated on social media, drawing sharp criticism from political leaders and triggering demands for legal action. Critics accused the former legislator of openly advocating violence and encouraging attacks on government property. Among those condemning the remarks was Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy , who described such statements as unacceptable in a democratic society.
Leaders of the ruling Congress party lodged complaints with police authorities, urging strict action. Following these complaints, a case was registered against Balka Suman at the Nampally Police Station in Hyderabad.
On Saturday, police personnel reached Telangana Bhavan , the BRS headquarters in Hyderabad, and took him into custody. The development prompted a strong reaction from BRS supporters, who gathered outside the party office and raised slogans against the state government. The situation briefly turned tense as party workers protested the police action.
Before being taken away by the police, Balka Suman alleged that the case was politically motivated. He claimed that the government was targeting him because of his criticism of its policies and attempts to raise public issues. At the same time, he said he would cooperate fully with the investigation and respect the legal process.
As the controversy intensified, Balka Suman later issued a clarification, stating that his reference to " militant action " was intended only to convey the need for stronger pressure tactics on the government regarding workers’ concerns. He maintained that he had no intention of inciting violence or encouraging unlawful activities.
According to the BRS leader, his comments reflected frustration over unresolved labour issues, the implementation of welfare measures for Singareni employees, and allegations of corruption. Police have launched a detailed investigation into the matter, while the episode continues to fuel political debate across Telangana.
