‘Balan The Boy’ Heads to Cannes Film Market for Industry Screening
A new independent film, Balan The Boy , directed by Chidambaram and written by Jithu Madhavan , is set to be showcased at the prestigious Marché du Film on May 14, offering the project a global platform among film industry professionals.
Starring newcomer Chandu Salimkumar, the film follows a young boy’s emotional journey as he searches for his mother amid personal and familial upheaval. The project also reunites the team with composer Sushin Shyam, known for his work in Manjummel Boys .
The screening will take place at Olympia 9 theatre as part of the Marché du Film , which runs alongside the globally renowned Cannes Film Festival , held annually in Cannes. Founded in 1946, the festival is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious platforms for cinema, showcasing top films from across the world and attracting leading filmmakers, actors, and critics.
At Cannes, films selected under official sections such as Competition, Un Certain Regard, and Out of Competition are curated entries, with the top prize being the Palme d’Or. In contrast, Balan The Boy will be presented as part of a market screening of a paid slot designed primarily for industry exposure rather than awards consideration.
The Marché du Film is among the world’s largest film markets, where producers, distributors, and sales agents convene to buy and sell film rights, negotiate deals, and scout new content. Market screenings serve as a key avenue for filmmakers, particularly independent creators , to attract international distributors, secure streaming deals, and gain entry into other global festivals.
Producers of Balan The Boy have highlighted the film’s universal themes as a major strength, expressing optimism about its potential to resonate with global audiences. For smaller films, such exposure at the Cannes market can often prove pivotal in securing wider distribution.
However, some industry voices, including writer and lyricist Varun Grover, have pointed out that a market screening does not carry the same artistic recognition as an official Cannes selection. Despite this distinction, the opportunity is seen as a significant step for the film’s international journey.
With its Cannes market debut, Balan The Boy now aims to convert industry attention into tangible deals, potentially paving the way for a broader global release.
