Bagalkote Tense After Stone-Pelting During Shivaji Jayanti Procession, Curbs Imposed
Tension gripped Bagalkote town in Karnataka after a stone-pelting incident during a Shivaji Jayanti procession sparked communal friction , prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders , deploy heavy police forces, and appeal for calm. While the situation is now under control, shops remained shut in several areas and daily life was disrupted as security measures were tightened.
The incident occurred late Thursday night near a mosque in the Navanagar–Killa Oni area when the procession was nearing completion. Police said stones were thrown, with one striking a security personnel, though no serious injuries were reported. Based on video evidence, eight people, including the prime accused , were arrested. Cases have been registered under provisions relating to unlawful assembly, rioting , obstruction of public servants, and attempt to murder.
Fresh tension surfaced Friday morning when a group of youths staged protests, raised slogans and allegedly resorted to stone-pelting despite restrictions, forcing police to conduct a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Senior police officials visited the area to review security arrangements.
Authorities imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita , banning assembly of more than four persons, carrying weapons, and organising public gatherings without permission. The curbs aim to prevent escalation and maintain law and order.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the violence and appealed for peace and communal harmony , assuring an impartial investigation and strict action against those responsible. He urged citizens not to fall prey to provocations and emphasized that ensuring a fear-free environment remains the government’s priority.
Opposition BJP leaders criticised the Congress government, alleging deterioration in law and order. State president B.Y. Vijayendra termed the incident condemnable and demanded stronger action, while MP Narayanasa Bandage questioned the circumstances surrounding gatherings near the mosque and announced plans for another procession.
District authorities are holding coordination meetings, monitoring rumours, and working to restore normalcy . Officials warned that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disturb peace.
