Former Indian cricket captain and senior Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin is set to take oath as a minister in the Telangana Cabinet tomorrow, marking a significant milestone in his political career.

Recently nominated as an MLC under the Governor’s quota, Azharuddin’s induction into the Cabinet has been approved by the Congress government. Although he had earlier announced plans to contest the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election, the party decided to strategically bring him into the legislature through the MLC route and assign him a ministerial berth.

According to sources, the Cabinet’s recommendations sent to the Governor included the names of Professor Kodandaram and Mohammad Azharuddin. The move is being seen as an effort by the Congress leadership to maintain internal balance while strengthening credibility and representation within the government.

Party insiders say Azharuddin has been actively engaging with the youth and minority communities, helping expand the Congress’ appeal in those sections. His elevation to the Cabinet is being viewed as both symbolic and strategic - aimed at consolidating minority support and leveraging his popularity to boost the party’s political presence.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad, with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, senior Congress leaders, and other dignitaries in attendance. Sources suggest that Azharuddin may be given charge of Sports and Youth Affairs or Minority Welfare, though an official announcement is yet to be made.

Azharuddin, who rose to fame in the late 1980s as one of India’s most stylish and successful cricket captains, led the national team to several memorable victories. After retiring from cricket, he entered politics and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009 as a Congress MP. Although he faced electoral setbacks later, his appointment to the Telangana Cabinet marks a new chapter in his multifaceted journey - from the cricket field to public service.

Political observers believe this development reinforces the Congress government’s commitment to inclusivity and adds star appeal to its leadership team.
