Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen has led heartfelt tributes to Viktor Axelsen after the Danish superstar announced his retirement, bringing down the curtain on one of badminton’s most dominant modern careers due to persistent back injuries .

Axelsen, widely regarded as a once in a generation player , retires with an extraordinary legacy that includes two Olympic gold medals at Tokyo and Paris, along with World Championship titles in 2017 and 2022 . Known for his towering presence, powerful smashes, and calm tactical mind, he redefined modern men’s singles badminton with a rare mix of strength and precision.

The Danish legend also spent 183 weeks as world No. 1 , the third longest reign in badminton history, and was a central figure in Denmark’s dominance in European team championships, contributing to multiple gold medal campaigns.

Reacting to the announcement, Lakshya Sen described Axelsen as more than just a champion. He praised his discipline, humility, and professionalism , saying badminton will remember him as one of the greatest to ever play the game.

“Badminton is blessed to have you and will remember you as one of the greatest to ever play the game ,” Lakshya wrote, adding that Axelsen’s character off the court is what truly sets him apart.

Lakshya also recalled their shared journey, from training together in Dubai in 2022 to competing on the sport’s biggest stages, including the All England Open and their memorable encounter at the Paris Olympics semifinals . He wished the Danish star success in his next chapter beyond competitive sport.

Adding to the tributes, Lakshya’s mentor and former India coach Vimal Kumar called Axelsen’s retirement a “significant loss for the sport itself.” He highlighted Axelsen’s global influence and suggested he could play a key role in badminton’s future development.

With his departure, badminton loses not just a champion, but a global icon whose legacy blends dominance, grace, and lasting inspiration .
