‘Avakay’ Film and Culture Festival to take place in Vijayawada: Minister Kandula Durgesh

The Andhra Pradesh government is set to showcase the state’s rich artistic heritage and the roots of Telugu cinema through a unique cultural platform. The three-day ‘Avakay’ Film and Culture Festival will be held from January 8 to 10 at the Punnami Ghat and Bhavani Island along the Krishna River in Vijayawada, announced Tourism and Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh.

The announcement was made at the Velagapudi Secretariat on Monday, alongside Tourism Department Secretary Ajay Jain, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director (APTDC MD) Amrapali Kata, and representatives from Teamwork Arts.

Minister Durgesh explained that the festival aligns with the vision of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan to transform the Amaravati-Vijayawada region into a contemporary cultural capital. Unlike conventional indoor events, the festival will take place in open public spaces, encouraging participation from the general public. He emphasized that the previous government neglected arts and artists, and the current administration aims not only to revive the cultural sector but also to instill a love for local storytelling traditions among the youth.

Tourism Secretary Ajay Jain highlighted that the festival will play a significant role in strengthening the state’s tourism industry. Alongside the Avakay Festival, prestigious events such as the Gandikota, Araku, Vishakhapatnam, and Flamingo festivals are planned across Andhra Pradesh in January.

APTDC MD Amrapali Kata added that the festival combines cinema, literature, and performing arts, attracting a diverse audience while connecting local traditions with tourism.

Over the three days, the festival will feature discussions on the evolution of Telugu cinema, literature, poetry sessions, Mushaira (Urdu poetry gatherings), dance, music, and theatre performances. Traditional arts such as leather puppet shows, heritage walks, ferry rides along the ghats, and local food festivals will add extra charm.

Additionally, Minister Durgesh revealed that meetings with senior officials will be held this week to discuss challenges faced by the Telugu film industry, followed by dates for interactions with prominent cinema personalities.
