Authorities issue advisory after bee attacks at Ajanta Caves, Highlighting heritage significance

Following a series of honey bee attacks on visitors at the Ajanta Caves, forest officials in Maharashtra have issued precautionary guidelines, while also drawing attention to the site’s global cultural importance.

A recent survey conducted across caves 1 to 26 identified three active honeycombs one near Cave 26 and two near Cave 10 . In response, the forest department has coordinated with the Archaeological Survey of India to manage the situation and prevent expansion of the hives.

Officials said certain human activities are triggering bee aggression. Strong perfumes and deodorants can attract bees due to their intense scents, while loud noises or sudden movements may provoke defensive behavior in bee colonies. Visitors have been advised to avoid scented products, maintain silence within the premises, and refrain from sudden movements.

Even as authorities focus on safety, experts stress that the incident underscores the delicate balance between tourism and conservation at the site. Carved between the 2nd century BCE and 6th century CE , the Ajanta Caves are among India’s most significant archaeological treasures, renowned for their exquisite Buddhist murals and rock-cut architecture. The caves served as ancient monastic complexes and learning centres, reflecting the evolution of Buddhist art, philosophy, and craftsmanship over centuries.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 , the caves attract thousands of visitors annually. The intricate paintings depicting Jataka tales and the life of the Buddha are considered masterpieces of ancient Indian art, offering rare insights into early cultural and religious practices.

An awareness campaign will be launched shortly, including signage across the site to inform tourists. The ASI has also been asked to take measures to safely manage the honeycombs without disturbing the ecosystem.

Officials said the advisory is a preventive step aimed at ensuring visitor safety while preserving the ecological and historical integrity of one of India’s most iconic heritage sites.
