Authorities Face Heat Over Safety Lapses After Odisha School Tragedy

In the wake of the fatal school gate collapse in Gajapati district, authorities are under pressure to take swift and comprehensive action, as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeks accountability in the case.

Officials said immediate steps in such incidents include ensuring timely medical assistance, securing the accident site, and initiating a police investigation. A First Information Report (FIR) is typically registered to probe the circumstances leading to the tragedy.

A detailed technical inquiry is also mandated to determine the cause of the structural failure. Preliminary focus is expected on possible lapses in construction quality, maintenance, and safety oversight. Responsibility may be fixed on school authorities as well as local engineering and administrative officials if negligence is established.

Following the NHRC’s intervention, the Odisha government has been directed to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks.
