Australia’s Cricket Legend Alyssa Healy to Retire After India Series

Alyssa Healy, one of the most prolific and decorated cricketers in women’s international cricket, has announced her retirement following Australia’s home series against India in March. The 35-year-old wicket-keeper batter will captain the Australian side one last time in three ODIs and a solitary women’s Test in Perth. She will not participate in the T20 series against India or the T20 World Cup in the UK later this year.

Healy, widely regarded as one of the finest batters of her generation, has an illustrious career spanning over 15 years. She has played 10 Tests, 123 ODIs, and 162 T20 Internationals, amassing 489 Test runs at an average of 30.56, 3,563 ODI runs at 35.98 including seven centuries, and 3,054 T20I runs at 25.45 with one century. She has been a vital part of Australia’s dominance in women’s cricket, winning a remarkable eight world titles — six in T20 World Cups and two in ODIs — and has been awarded Player of the Tournament in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for two editions , underlining her impact in high-pressure competitions.

Healy has consistently been ranked among the top batters in ICC rankings for both ODIs and T20Is. Her performances against India have been particularly impressive, scoring over 1,200 runs across formats with multiple match-winning innings in both bilateral series and ICC tournaments.

Married to Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, Healy has often credited her family support for sustaining her long and successful career. She has also been a standout in domestic T20 leagues, continuing her association with the Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) . While she has announced her retirement from international cricket, her involvement in franchise cricket, including the WBBL, is expected to continue selectively, though she will not feature in the upcoming Women’s IPL this year.

Reflecting on her decision to retire, Healy said, “It’s with mixed emotions that the India series will be my last. I still love representing Australia, but I’ve somewhat lost the competitive edge that has driven me since the start. Finishing my career at home against India, one of the biggest series on our calendar, feels right.” She also spoke candidly about injuries and the mental toll they took in recent years, noting that last year’s WBBL was a wake-up call in terms of her physical limits.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg paid tribute to Healy, calling her “one of the all-time greats of the game” and praising her contributions both on and off the field. “Alyssa’s career has inspired millions and changed women’s cricket for the better. We look forward to celebrating her achievements throughout the series against India,” he said.
