Australian Pace Attack Shaken as Hazlewood Misses Series, Cummins Set to Lead

Australian pace bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the ongoing Ashes series due to hamstring and Achilles injuries. Hazlewood, who missed Australia’s first two victories over England in Perth and Brisbane, had been expected to return later in the five-match series. However, coach Andrew McDonald confirmed on Tuesday that Hazlewood’s focus will now shift to preparation for the Twenty20 World Cup early next year.

“It’s been a disappointing setback,” McDonald said. “He had faced a couple of unexpected injuries, and the preparation for the World Cup will now become the priority.” Hazlewood has been a mainstay of Australia’s bowling attack for more than a decade.

There was positive news for Australia, as captain Pat Cummins is expected to return for the third Test in Adelaide, starting December 17. Cummins had missed the first two Tests while recovering from a back problem but has been increasing his training workload at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. His return is expected to see him resume captaincy duties, with Steve Smith having led the team in his absence.

“Pat is as prepared as he can be,” McDonald said. “His skills and fitness have been tested in net simulations, and barring any setbacks, he will lead the side in Adelaide.”

Australia’s bowling attack so far has been led by Mitchell Starc, the only regular pacer involved in the first two Tests, who has taken 18 wickets and won consecutive Man-of-the-Match awards.

England, struggling in Australia and yet to win an Ashes Test there since the 2010-11 series, is taking a brief break to rest and recover before the Adelaide Test. The fourth Test is scheduled to begin on Boxing Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, while the fifth and final Test will be played in Sydney from January 4. England will require a win in Adelaide to remain in contention for reclaiming the Ashes.
