A group of 19 Australian women and children linked to the Islamic State group has returned from Syria, arriving in Sydney and Melbourne under heavy security, with authorities confirming that no immediate arrests have been made , though investigations are continuing.

The cohort, comprising seven women and 12 children, was repatriated from the Roj camp in northeast Syria , where families linked to Islamic State have been held since the group’s territorial defeat in 2019. The return was carried out in a coordinated operation involving multiple flights that landed separately in Melbourne and Sydney.

Authorities said all returnees underwent security screening, identity verification, and device examinations upon arrival. While earlier repatriation waves saw some women arrested on charges including terrorism and slavery offences, officials have not yet laid charges in this latest group, though federal and state counter-terrorism agencies are actively assessing potential criminal conduct.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke reiterated that the government did not assist the return and warned that anyone found to have committed offences would face the full force of the law. Officials also confirmed that Australia’s security agencies have been preparing for such returns for more than a decade, with established monitoring frameworks already activated.

Reports indicate that the group left Syria via transit routes through third countries before flying into Australia , with at least one woman previously subject to a temporary exclusion order remaining outside the returning cohort. Authorities also confirmed that two Australians remain in Roj camp following this latest evacuation.

The repatriation follows earlier returns this month, reinforcing ongoing debate over national security, legal accountability, and rehabilitation measures for children involved in extremist-linked environments.
