After a narrow opening loss that showed promise, India’s junior women’s hockey team faltered badly in their second match, crashing to a 0-5 hammering against Australia U21 in Canberra on Saturday. The defeat, their second in as many days, highlighted defensive vulnerabilities and a lack of cutting edge in attack.

Australia signaled their intent early, pressing aggressively and unsettling the Indian backline. Makayla Jones struck twice in the 10th and 11th minutes, putting the visitors on the defensive before they could settle into rhythm. The hosts maintained their stranglehold after the break, with Sami Love (38’) extending the lead through a well-taken field goal.

The final quarter brought more misery for India as Migaliya Howell (50’) added to the tally, before Jones sealed her hat-trick in the 52nd minute to cap a clinical performance.

For India, the match was a sobering reminder of the gap in execution. Despite working hard to create opportunities, their circle entries lacked precision, and turnovers in midfield repeatedly invited Australian counterattacks. The hosts, in contrast, converted chances with ruthless efficiency.

With two defeats to start their campaign, the Indian side faces the challenge of regrouping quickly. A sharper defensive setup and better finishing will be key as they prepare for the third match of the tour, scheduled for Monday against the same opponents.

T he Indian junior women’s hockey team will play their third match of the tour on Monday, September 29.
