Aussie injury woes: Captain Marsh out, Smith called up for T20 World Cup opener

Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign got an early setback as captain Mitchell Marsh was ruled out of the opening match against Ireland due to a groin injury , a strain or tear in the muscles of the inner thigh that can restrict movement and cause significant pain, prompting the inclusion of veteran batter Steve Smith as cover.

With Marsh sidelined, Travis Head will lead the side in the opener, while Matt Renshaw is set to make his maiden World Cup appearance . The 29-year-old Renshaw, who made his T20 international debut last month against Pakistan in Lahore, will be keen to make his mark on the global stage.

A Cricket Australia statement confirmed Marsh’s injury details: “Mitchell Marsh will miss the opening match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup after sustaining a direct blow to the groin during training earlier this week. He is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement. Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice , with an expected recovery period of at least two to three weeks .”

Smith, who last played a T20I in February 2025 but has been performing strongly in domestic competitions, will travel to Sri Lanka as cover , ready to step in if required and to acclimatise to local conditions.

Marsh’s injury, caused by a hit from one of Australia’s assistant coaches during training, is the latest blow for a squad already missing frontline pacers Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins , leaving Australia with a depleted lineup heading into the World Cup opener. The absence of so many key players has raised questions about the team’s balance and strategy for the tournament.
