At least 44 people dead after torrential rains in Mexico

Mexico is reeling from devastating floods and landslides caused by the remnants of Hurricane Priscilla and Tropical Storm Raymond, leaving at least 47 people dead and more than 38 missing. President Claudia Sheinbaum has taken an active role in coordinating emergency response across the hardest-hit states of Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, and Querétaro. The casualties include 18 in Veracruz, 16 in Hidalgo, 9 in Puebla, and 1 in Querétaro. Over 16,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, at least 139 towns are in need of immediate assistance, thousands of people have been displaced, and widespread power outages and internet disruptions have affected multiple regions. Numerous roads and highways have been rendered impassable due to flooding and landslides.

On Sunday, October 12, 2025, President Sheinbaum convened a virtual meeting with governors from Veracruz, Puebla, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, and Guerrero to coordinate a unified emergency response. She also visited Poza Rica in Veracruz, one of the most severely affected areas, reassuring residents:

"We know that there is much despair and concern; we will help everyone. Cleaning work will be carried out with full scope, without wasting any resources."

The National Emergency Committee remains in continuous session, while military personnel and rescue teams have been deployed for evacuations and aid distribution. A census of affected populations has been initiated to accurately assess damage and ensure effective aid delivery. Dramatic scenes show homes submerged in mud, rescues conducted via life rafts, and emergency teams navigating flooded streets.

President Sheinbaum stressed that all affected individuals would receive government support, coordinating closely with federal and state authorities to manage relief and recovery. The government has pledged comprehensive assistance to address immediate humanitarian needs, including shelter, food, electricity restoration, and communication services, as well as longer-term rebuilding efforts.
