At Least 3 Policemen Injured in BJP-CPI(M) Clash in Kerala, 94 Workers Booked

A clash between BJP and CPI(M) workers in Kerala’s capital left three policemen injured and led to multiple cases being registered after a neighbourhood dispute escalated into political violence, police said.

The incident took place on Sunday evening at Malamukal in Nettayam under the Vattiyoorkavu police station limits. Police said the confrontation stemmed from a property dispute between two relatives , one linked to the BJP and the other a supporter of the CPI(M), who had earlier filed complaints and counter-complaints.

According to local reports, tensions rose after allegations that a CPI(M) worker misbehaved with the wife of a BJP worker , prompting a police complaint. Later in the day, supporters from both sides gathered in the area, leading to a heated argument.

By the evening, groups from the rival parties allegedly pelted stones and attacked each other with sticks near St Sebastian’s Church at Malamukal. A police team that reached the spot around 8.30 pm to control the situation was also caught in the violence.

Police said Civil Police Officers Deepu and Shibu and Station House Officer Vipin AC were injured during the clash. According to the FIR, Deepu suffered a head injury after being struck with a stone, while the SHO and another officer were attacked during the scuffle.

Authorities registered cases against around 94 BJP and CPI(M) workers , with about 40 individuals specifically named in the FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rioting, unlawful assembly and assault on public servants.

Later in the night, BJP workers protested outside the Vattiyoorkavu police station , alleging partisan action by police. A separate case was registered against more than 100 protesters for unlawful assembly and obstruction of traffic.

Police have so far taken six people into custody as investigations into the incident continue.
