At Hyderabad Event, Shivraj Singh Chouhan Condemns Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday strongly criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi , saying such statements weaken the standards of democratic debate and political dignity in the country.
Speaking to the media after visiting the ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research in Hyderabad , Chouhan accused the Congress leadership of making “baseless and irresponsible” allegations out of political frustration following successive electoral setbacks. He said criticism and ideological opposition are natural in a democracy, but personal attacks and insulting language against the Prime Minister cross the boundaries of healthy political discourse.
The Union Minister described the remarks as a reflection of a “cheap political mindset” and urged opposition leaders to maintain decorum while engaging in public debate. According to him, India’s democratic traditions are built on strong disagreements, but they must be expressed with restraint and respect for constitutional institutions.
Chouhan also said the Congress was unable to accept the growing global stature of Prime Minister Modi and the continued support he receives from the Indian public. Referring to the international recognition accorded to Modi in recent years, he noted that several countries have honoured the Prime Minister with their highest civilian awards. He added that Modi has consistently dedicated such honours to the people of India rather than treating them as personal achievements.
The BJP leader further asserted that the people of the country would not tolerate disrespectful comments directed at a leader who, in his view, has elevated India’s standing on the world stage through diplomacy, economic initiatives, and international engagement.
During the interaction, Chouhan also congratulated Prime Minister Modi on being conferred the prestigious ‘Agricola Medal 2026’ by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. He described the recognition as a proud moment for India and said it reflected the country’s growing influence in the fields of agriculture, food security, and sustainable farming practices.
The exchange comes amid intensifying political rhetoric between the BJP and Congress ahead of key political battles, with both parties increasingly targeting each other over leadership, governance, and national issues.
