Assistant Professor faces charges amid harassment allegations, inquiry underway
A medical college professor on the outskirts of Bengaluru has been booked on charges of sexual harassment after allegedly proposing to a female student inside a classroom, triggering outrage among students and drawing widespread attention on social media.
The incident reportedly took place on March 23 at a medical college in Nelamangala taluk. It came to light after videos of the episode surfaced online and quickly went viral, prompting sharp criticism from viewers.
According to police, the accused, an assistant professor in the Microbiology Department , was seen in one of the videos expressing his feelings to a student and claiming she had earlier confessed her affection for him. The student, however, rejected the claim and objected to the proposal.
Tensions escalated soon after, with visuals showing the student confronting the professor. In the footage, she is seen hitting him with slippers, while a group of students gathered around, allegedly assaulting and verbally abusing him.
Based on a complaint lodged by the college principal, a case was registered on Thursday at the Nelamangala Rural Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to assault, sexual harassment, and criminal trespass.
The First Information Report (FIR) states that the professor had previously been accused of inappropriate conduct on campus and of harassing female students. Complaints had been submitted earlier by students seeking protection, following which the college administration issued a notice to the accused. He was instructed to appear for an internal inquiry and was barred from entering the campus during the proceedings.
Despite these restrictions, the professor allegedly entered the premises on March 23 and is accused of forcibly holding a female student’s hand and behaving in an inappropriate manner.
Police said the incident caused distress among students and disrupted the academic environment. The complaint further alleged that the accused not only violated the entry ban but also continued to misbehave with students on campus. An investigation is currently underway.
