The Telangana Assembly witnessed a dramatic turn on Tuesday as a scheduled budget debate spiraled into a fierce political confrontation, with the ruling Congress and opposition BJP clashing over the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse , briefly overshadowing core governance discussions.

The flashpoint came when BJP Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy was detailing the Centre’s development initiatives. The discussion was abruptly interrupted by Panchayat Raj Minister Seethakka , who questioned the alleged dilution of Mahatma Gandhi’s name in the rural employment scheme framework. What followed was not a policy clarification, but a charged exchange rooted in history, ideology, and political identity.

Seethakka escalated the debate with sharp remarks, accusing ideological affiliates of the RSS of being linked to Gandhi’s assassination, while also condemning what she described as attempts to glorify Godse. Invoking historical precedent, she pointed out that the RSS had once been banned under Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel , and questioned the moral contradiction in sidelining Gandhi’s legacy while defending his assassin.

The BJP hit back strongly. Maheshwar Reddy dismissed the allegations as factually incorrect and politically motivated , asserting that Godse had no organisational connection with the RSS , a claim he said had been clarified in the past. He urged Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar to remove Seethakka’s remarks from official records, accusing the ruling party of diverting attention from pressing fiscal discussions.

As the House grew tense, the debate expanded beyond historical arguments into broader political fault lines. Seethakka accused the Central government of continuing discrimination against Telangana, arguing that despite electing BJP MPs, the state was being denied its fair share of funds and project support . She described this as a long-standing pattern of neglect and demanded greater accountability.

The confrontation intensified as other ministers joined in. Minister Vakiti Srihari challenged BJP members to openly condemn Godse’s actions, drawing a clear ideological line, while asserting that religion should not be used for political gain . Minister Ponnam Prabhakar criticized recent BJP protests, calling them distractions from governance.

Adding an economic dimension, Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu highlighted Telangana’s significant contribution to national GDP and its substantial tax payments, alleging that the Centre was still subjecting the state to financial injustice .

In the end, a session meant to focus on development priorities and budget allocations was overshadowed by a deeply polarizing debate. The episode not only disrupted proceedings but also underscored how historical narratives and ideological divides continue to shape contemporary political discourse often at the cost of governance-focused deliberations.
