Assam to Finalise Voter List by January 4: Claims, Objections and Polling Station Checks

Assam has begun a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of its electoral rolls, with the final voters’ list scheduled for publication on January 4, 2027. The exercise will involve electoral officials and recognised political parties in reviewing voter records and verifying polling station arrangements, the Chief Electoral Officer’s office said.

The revision will cover the identification of duplicate entries, deceased electors and voters who have permanently shifted from their registered addresses. Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will process deletions using Form 7 and other applicable provisions under Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines.

The authorities will also undertake the rationalisation and reorganisation of polling stations following physical verification of existing locations. The exercise is scheduled to be completed by November 2, 2026, while the draft electoral rolls will be published on November 12.

The period for filing claims and objections will run from November 12 to December 11. Officials will dispose of the submissions by December 28, before the final rolls are published. Claims and objections received during continuous updation will also be addressed before publication of the draft list.

As part of the polling station review, EROs will assess whether additional stations are required. Each polling station should ordinarily have no more than 1,200 electors, unless prior approval is obtained from the ECI. Where feasible, officials will redistribute sections between neighbouring polling stations before proposing new facilities.

Authorities will also seek to ensure that electors do not have to travel more than two kilometres to reach their polling stations or cross natural barriers. The jurisdiction of each station will be clearly defined to prevent overlapping assignments.

District Election Officers (DEOs) will arrange physical inspections of existing and proposed polling station locations through designated senior officers. The inspections will assess building conditions, suitability and compliance with prescribed standards, with the officers certifying their findings.

Before proposals for new polling stations are finalised, DEOs will consult representatives of recognised political parties and forward consolidated proposals to the Chief Electoral Officer for approval by the ECI. Any proposed relocation of an existing station will require physical verification, inspection and recording of the proposed site’s latitude and longitude.

The CEO’s office and DEOs will hold regular consultations with political parties to share updates and seek feedback during the revision process.
