In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Assam Police and the Special Task Force (STF) seized narcotics worth nearly ₹12.5 crore and arrested three suspected drug traffickers during a coordinated operation in Kamrup district, officials said on Sunday.

The operation was carried out in Amingaon following specific intelligence inputs, leading law enforcement agencies to intercept a vehicle allegedly transporting a large consignment of illegal drugs. During the search, officials recovered 50,000 Yaba tablets and 67.5 grams of heroin, dealing a significant blow to an alleged drug trafficking network operating in the region.

Announcing the success of the operation on X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the seizure reflected the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and coordinated action by the STF Assam and Kamrup Police. He added that three suspected traffickers were taken into custody and further investigation is underway to identify the source and intended destination of the narcotics.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the state's commitment to combating the drug menace, stating that Assam's anti-drug enforcement drive will continue with full force. Over the past few years, the state has intensified surveillance along key transit routes and stepped up operations against narcotics smuggling, resulting in several high-value seizures and arrests.

Among the substances recovered were Yaba tablets, commonly known as "crazy medicine" in Thailand. The illicit tablets contain a combination of methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant, and caffeine, and are widely trafficked across parts of South and Southeast Asia. Authorities have warned that the synthetic drug poses serious health and law enforcement challenges due to its addictive nature and growing cross-border circulation.

Police officials said investigations are continuing to trace the wider network linked to the seized consignment, as enforcement agencies remain focused on disrupting organized drug trafficking and strengthening Assam's ongoing campaign against narcotics.
