Assam Rifles Bust Narcotics Move, Seize Heroin Worth Over ₹1.87 Crore

Assam Rifles personnel seized 250.21 grams of heroin worth more than ₹1.87 crore during an operation near the India-Myanmar border in Mizoram’s Champhai district, an official said on Sunday.

The seizure was made on Saturday following specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of narcotics in the border area. Acting on the information, Assam Rifles troops laid an ambush along the Tiau River in the Vangkai area of Zokhawthar, the force’s spokesperson said.

During the operation, the troops noticed a woman crossing the river while carrying a green polybag. According to the official, the woman reached the riverbank and placed the bag there before signalling to another person who was waiting nearby on a scooter.

The situation changed when the woman and the other individual noticed the presence of Assam Rifles personnel. The woman reportedly fled towards Myanmar, while the second person escaped from the area on the scooter. The pair left the bag behind as they fled, the official said.

The troops subsequently searched the abandoned bag and recovered 250.21 grams of heroin, which was estimated to have a market value exceeding ₹1.87 crore.

The seizure is part of continued efforts by security agencies to curb the smuggling of narcotics along the India-Myanmar border, a route that has been monitored closely for illegal activities.

Following the recovery, the seized contraband was handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai for further investigation and necessary legal action, the Assam Rifles spokesperson said.

Authorities are expected to investigate the source and intended destination of the seized narcotics, as well as identify and trace the individuals who allegedly abandoned the contraband and fled during the operation.
