Assam Presents ₹62,295 Crore Interim Budget Ahead of Assembly Polls
Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog on Tuesday presented a ₹62,294.78 crore interim budget for the financial year 2026-27, marking her last budget before the state goes into assembly elections scheduled in a few months. The budget, tabled as a vote on account , seeks approval for initial expenditures to allow the government to carry on with normal services pending the full budget.
In her 33-page budget speech , Neog highlighted Assam’s rapid economic growth, saying the state is currently the fastest-growing in India , according to RBI data . She added that Assam is on track to become a ₹10 lakh crore economy by 2028 , two years ahead of its earlier 2030 target.
Assam’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) expanded by 45% between FY 2019-20 and FY 2024-25 , significantly outperforming the national growth average of 29%. The state’s per capita income has more than doubled over the past five years, rising from ₹86,947 in 2020-21 to ₹1,85,429 in 2025-26 , a jump of 113% .
The interim budget ensures the government can continue funding essential services , ongoing projects, and welfare schemes during the election period. Presenting a vote-on-account is a standard practice in states going to polls, allowing continuity of administration without introducing new long-term policies that may require legislative approval.
Neog said the budget reflects the government’s commitment to sustaining Assam’s growth momentum , enhancing economic development, and maintaining fiscal stability even as the state prepares for elections.
