Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched the Chief Minister's Foreign Language Initiative (CM-FLIGHT), a pioneering scheme aimed at equipping the state’s youth with Japanese language proficiency and opening doors to overseas employment opportunities.

Under the initiative, successful candidates will have the chance to secure five-year work visas in Japan, earning salaries of up to ₹2 lakh per month. The cost of the language training, estimated at ₹1.8 lakh, will be largely subsidized, with the Assam government contributing ₹1 lakh, the Japanese government ₹50,000, and students paying only ₹30,000.

Speaking to reporters, CM Sarma highlighted that the initiative stems from MoUs signed with Japan during the Advantage Assam 2.0 event. “Students who pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N2 level will be placed in Japanese companies, with visa support for five years and salaries of up to ₹2 lakh,” he said.

As part of a pilot project this financial year, training will be imparted by ASEAN ONE Co. Ltd., Jaceex Ventures LLP, and Meiko Career Partners Co. Ltd., who will also facilitate placements under Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa programme. CM Sarma added that discussions are underway to extend similar opportunities to South Korea and Germany.

The scheme is expected to tackle unemployment and underemployment in Assam by providing youth with globally relevant skills and direct access to the international job market. Successful applicants will also receive a subsidy of ₹1.5 lakh to undergo structured language training, gaining short-term paid work experience in Japan.

“This initiative reflects Assam’s vision to empower youth with global skills and strengthen the state’s position as a hub for international workforce development,” CM Sarma noted.

CM-FLIGHT marks a significant step toward creating pathways for Assam’s young workforce to compete and succeed on the international stage.
