Assam Floods Ease, Yet 24,000 Remain In Grip Of Rising Waters Across Five Districts
The flood situation in Assam showed further signs of improvement on Tuesday, but nearly 24,000 people remained affected across five districts as floodwaters continued to inundate villages and damage crops and infrastructure.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 23,800 people were affected in Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Sivasagar.
Nagaon remained the worst-hit district, with nearly 15,000 people affected. Sivasagar reported around 4,500 affected residents, while approximately 3,500 people in Jorhat continued to reel under the impact of the floods.
The situation, however, has improved significantly from Monday, when nearly 32,000 people across four districts were affected.
No fresh deaths were reported, leaving Assam's flood-related death toll at 105 this year.
Authorities are currently operating 10 relief camps and distribution centres across four districts, providing assistance to 806 affected people. In the past 24 hours, relief agencies distributed 5.74 quintals of rice, 1.53 quintals of dal, 0.46 quintals of salt and 17.37 litres of mustard oil among flood victims.
Despite the improvement, the flood has left a considerable trail of destruction. Around 115 villages remain under water, while 3,206 hectares of crop area have been damaged.
Floodwaters have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in several districts, adding to the challenges faced by local administrations.
The Dhansiri river at Numaligarh was still flowing above the danger level, indicating that the threat has not completely receded.
The flooding has also affected livestock, with 14,645 domestic animals and poultry reported to be impacted across the state.
With waters gradually receding in several areas, authorities remain focused on relief operations and assessing damage as Assam continues its recovery from another spell of widespread flooding.
