Assam Floods Ease as Affected Population Drops Below 1.8 Lakh, Death Toll Holds at 82

Assam's flood situation showed signs of improvement on Saturday, with the number of affected people declining to 1.78 lakh from 1.92 lakh a day earlier. While the overall impact of the floods has eased, the number of affected districts has increased to seven, highlighting that the crisis is still unfolding in several parts of the state.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), no new flood-related deaths were reported during the last 24 hours, keeping the overall death toll from this year's floods and landslides at 82.

The deluge continues to affect 349 villages across Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Bajali, Dhemaji, Sonitpur and Jorhat districts. Charaideo remains the worst-hit district with 75,199 people affected, followed by Sivasagar, where 58,824 residents continue to face the impact of flooding.

Although water levels have receded in several areas, the Dikhow River at Sivasagar and the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh in Golaghat continue to flow above the danger level, keeping authorities on alert.

Relief operations are continuing across the affected regions. A total of 44 relief camps are currently sheltering around 15,000 displaced people, while 17 relief distribution centres are supplying essential items to 5,569 people.

The floods have also taken a heavy toll on agriculture and livestock. More than 15,060 hectares of cropland remain submerged, 1,543 animals have been washed away, and another 6,765 livestock have been affected.

Authorities have also reported widespread damage to houses, roads, bridges, schools and cattle sheds, underscoring the long road to recovery even as floodwaters gradually recede.
