Assam Cabinet approves appointment of Blind World Cup cricketer Simu Das

The Assam cabinet on Thursday approved the appointment of Simu Das , a member of India’s Women’s T20 Blind Cricket World Cup winning team, as a physical instructor under the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision after the cabinet meeting, describing it as a recognition of Simu Das’s sporting excellence and contribution to Indian cricket. Born on February 11, 2001, Das is 24 years old and hails from Nagaon district of Assam. An all rounder for the Indian blind women’s cricket team, she played a key role in India’s triumph at the inaugural Women’s T20 Blind Cricket World Cup.

In the final against Nepal, Das delivered a standout all round performance, scoring 86 runs and taking a key wicket, which earned her the Player of the Match award. The cabinet’s decision is being seen as a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and encouraging athletes with disabilities.

The cabinet also cleared the allotment of land for the upcoming Ammonia Urea Project in Assam. The foundation stone for the project is scheduled to be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 21.

In another major decision, the council of ministers approved the release of Rs 250 crore to the Bodoland Territorial Council under the state’s Priority Development Fund Rural for the financial year 2025 to 26.

Highlighting its focus on environmental protection, the cabinet approved the declaration of Kumari Beel and Dhamar Beel in Goalpara district as proposed reserved forests under the Assam Forest Regulation of 1891.
