The Asian Weightlifting Championships , initially scheduled in Ahmedabad from April 1 to 10, 2026 , have been postponed to May 12–17 owing to the ongoing conflict in West Asia .

The Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) said the rescheduling was necessary to ensure the safe and smooth participation of all delegations. In a statement, the AWF noted that the current situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region, including airspace closures following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, posed significant logistical challenges for participants.

This continental championship , a major event in the Asian weightlifting calendar, brings together top athletes from across Asia and serves as a key platform for competition ahead of international tournaments. The postponement allows all athletes, coaches, and officials to plan travel safely and adjust training schedules.

Organisers in Ahmedabad confirmed that preparations for the event are continuing, including venue readiness, logistics , and health and safety protocols . The AWF emphasised that the new dates were selected to minimise disruption and ensure that the championships are conducted successfully and safely.

The West Asia conflict has already impacted several sporting events and international travel, prompting federations worldwide to adopt contingency measures . By rescheduling the championship, the AWF aims to maintain the integrity of the competition while prioritising the well-being of all participants.

The event’s postponement provides additional time for athletes to prepare and acclimatise , ensuring a competitive and safe tournament when it begins on May 12 .
