Indian cricket veteran Ravichandran Ashwin is set to begin a new chapter in his career after signing with San Francisco Unicorns for the 2026 season of Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States.

The franchise confirmed the signing on Saturday, describing it as a landmark moment for both the team and the league. With this move, Ashwin will become the first India capped cricketer to participate in Major League Cricket , underlining the tournament’s growing global reach.

Major League Cricket, launched in 2023, is the United States’ professional T20 franchise league , bringing together international stars and domestic American players as the sport steadily grows in the country.

Ashwin arrives with immense international experience and a decorated résumé. He was part of India’s triumphant squads in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, and has played more than 100 matches each in Tests and One Day Internationals, along with 65 T20 Internationals.

Known for his tactical awareness and clever variations, Ashwin remains one of the most respected spin bowlers in modern cricket. His presence is expected to add both skill and leadership to the Unicorns’ squad.

The veteran spinner also boasts an impressive record in the Indian Premier League, where he ranks among the top five wicket takers in the tournament’s history . Over the years, he has represented franchises including Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals.

Speaking about the move, Ashwin said the opportunity to be part of cricket’s growth in the United States was exciting.

“The MLC has shown that it can bring world class players together while promoting domestic talent in the US. Being part of that journey with the San Francisco Unicorns was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” he said.

Ashwin added that his focus will be on helping the Unicorns push for their first championship while entertaining fans in the Bay Area. San Francisco Unicorns head coach Cameron White said the spinner’s experience and cricketing knowledge would be invaluable for the team.
