Ashmita Reaches Malaysia Masters Quarterfinals in Resurgent Comeback Campaign
India’s campaign at the 2026 Malaysia Masters has now narrowed to a single contender, with Ashmita Chaliha emerging as the country’s lone surviving shuttler after a commanding run into the women’s singles quarterfinals at the Super 500 tournament in Kuala Lumpur. The Assamese left-hander produced one of her most assured performances of the season, defeating Malaysia’s former junior world champion Goh Jin Wei 21-13, 21-16 in just 27 minutes at the Axiata Arena on Thursday.
Starting her campaign from the qualification rounds earlier this week, Ashmita has steadily gathered momentum and delivered back-to-back impressive wins in the main draw. The victory over World No. 55 Goh marked the third time in her career that she has reached the quarterfinals of a BWF Super 500 event, underlining a strong resurgence after months of injury rehabilitation.
The 26-year-old from Assam, known for her aggressive left-handed angles and sharp court coverage, dictated rallies from the outset against the Malaysian favourite. Ashmita combined disciplined defence with improved attacking intent, repeatedly forcing errors from Goh through accurate placement and patient rally construction. Even when the home player attempted to mount a comeback in the second game, the Indian maintained control with calm shot selection and effective net play to seal the contest in straight games.
Her impressive Malaysia Masters campaign has also carried a deeper personal significance. Ashmita recently returned from a lengthy injury layoff following a middle meniscus tear and surgery that sidelined her for nearly eight months. According to reports, she had not even anticipated reaching the quarterfinal stage and was considering rescheduling her return flight before defeating Goh Jin Wei.
Ashmita will now face Denmark’s eighth seed Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt in the last-eight clash. The Dane advanced after defeating India’s Malvika Bansod in a dramatic three-game battle. Malvika had started strongly by taking the opening game 21-16, but Kjaersfeldt responded emphatically to win the next two games 21-8, 21-15 in a contest lasting nearly an hour. The Danish shuttler had earlier also eliminated another Indian, Anmol Kharb , during her run in Kuala Lumpur.
India’s challenge in women’s singles suffered another setback when reigning Thailand Masters champion Devika Sihag was outclassed by top seed and former Olympic champion Chen Yufei of China. Chen controlled proceedings throughout the 36-minute encounter, sealing a comfortable 21-16, 21-13 victory.
The exits continued across the doubles categories as well. In mixed doubles, the Indian pair of Sathwik Reddy Kanapuram and Radhika Sharma fought hard before suffering a narrow 12-21, 25-27 defeat against the American combination of Presley Smith and Jennie Gai . Meanwhile, in men’s doubles, Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun bowed out after losing 14-21, 15-21 to China’s Hu Ke Yuan and Lin Xiang Yi in 35 minutes.
Hariharan and Arjun had earlier produced one of India’s standout performances of the tournament by upsetting the seventh-seeded French brothers Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov 21-19, 21-15 in the opening round, but were unable to sustain that momentum in the pre-quarterfinals.
India had already endured a disappointing start to the tournament after leading men’s singles players Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy crashed out on Wednesday, leaving Ashmita as the nation’s final hope heading into the quarterfinal stage. With major events such as the World Championships and Asian Games later this season, Ashmita’s deep run in Kuala Lumpur could prove crucial in rebuilding confidence and securing valuable ranking points on the BWF World Tour.
