Arya's 'Sarpatta 2' Is a Prequel, Dushara Vijayan Confirms Shoot Begins This Month

Arya’s Sarpatta Parambarai became one of the biggest Tamil hits of 2021. Directed by Pa. Ranjith, the film skipped theatres because of the COVID-19 lockdown and premiered on Amazon Prime Video. Set in 1970s North Chennai, it won praise for its boxing scenes, strong performances, and its mix of sports, politics, and emotion.

The makers announced Sarpatta 2 last year, and fans have been waiting for fresh updates ever since. Now, actress Dushara Vijayan has shared a major detail about the film.

In a recent interview, Dushara confirmed that Sarpatta 2 will be a prequel, not a sequel. Instead of continuing the story after the first film, it will go back in time and explore events that happened earlier. Director Pa. Ranjith had earlier kept this detail under wraps, saying only that the film would be set in an interesting period and would have a stronger political backdrop along with the boxing action that made the first film popular.

Dushara said, “Sarpatta 2 shooting begins this month. I’m very excited. This one is going to be a prequel to the story, so I'm even looking forward to seeing how it’s going to shape up. Mariyamma is coming back. Sarpatta Part 1 was released on OTT due to COVID, but this one is going to have a proper theatrical release.”

The first film starred Arya, Pasupathy, John Vijay, John Kokken, Shabeer Kallarakkal, Kalaiyarasan, and Dushara Vijayan. Reports suggest several key actors are expected to return for the new film. After multiple delays due to Pa. Ranjith’s other commitments, production is finally set to begin, with Sarpatta 2 aiming for a theatrical release unlike its predecessor.
