Artificial Intelligence education to begin early under new roadmap aligned with NEP 2020

In a significant step towards preparing India’s students for an AI-driven future, the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L), Ministry of Education, has reaffirmed its commitment to integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into school education. A stakeholder consultation was recently held with representatives from CBSE, NCERT, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) to discuss the roadmap for introducing AI as a core learning component in schools.

Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, emphasized the concept of “AI as a public good,” stating that the technology must not only enhance learning and innovation but also be used responsibly to address ethical and societal challenges. He noted that AI will change the way students learn and absorb knowledge, making it essential to integrate it seamlessly into both curriculum and pedagogy.

According to the ministry, AI will be introduced from Grade 3 onwards, in line with global standards and the ethos of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The initiative will be supported by the development of dedicated learning materials—including textbooks, handbooks, and digital resources—along with enhanced teacher training programmes to ensure effective classroom implementation.

The rollout is expected to begin with the next academic year, marking a major transformation in school education. By embedding AI education early, the government aims to cultivate creative, analytical, and ethical thinkers capable of driving innovation for Viksit Bharat 2047.

This initiative reflects the Ministry’s broader vision to make India’s schools AI-ready, equipping students with future-oriented skills and preparing them to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological world.
