Arthur Conan Doyle’s life to inspire new India-UK film “elementary My Dear Holmes”

The brilliant mind behind Sherlock Holmes is stepping into the spotlight himself. A new India-UK co-production feature film titled Elementary My Dear Holmes will chronicle the extraordinary life and imagination of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the celebrated British author, physician, and creator of the world’s most famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes.

The film was officially announced on Monday at a special event held at the historic Guildhall in London, marking a significant collaboration between Indian and British cinema. The project will be directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Srijit Mukherji and produced by Shahnaab Alam, known for bringing together cross-cultural storytelling ventures.

Mukherji, whose acclaimed works include Autograph , Jaatishwar , and Gumnaami , said the film aims to uncover the intriguing intersections between Conan Doyle’s real experiences and the fictional detective universe he created. “It’s a story about the man behind the myth how his own life, beliefs, and conflicts shaped the genius of Sherlock Holmes,” the filmmaker said.

Born in 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Doyle was a trained physician who turned to writing, creating Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson characters that revolutionized detective fiction and inspired generations of readers and filmmakers. Beyond literature, he was also known for his fascination with science, spirituality, and the supernatural.

Elementary My Dear Holmes will reportedly blend biographical drama with elements of mystery and imagination, tracing Doyle’s journey from a struggling doctor to one of the most influential storytellers in the world.

The India-UK collaboration is expected to feature a diverse cast and be filmed across London, Edinburgh, and select locations in India. With its mix of history, creativity, and global appeal, Elementary My Dear Holmes promises to be one of the most anticipated biographical dramas of the year.
