The sensational arsenic poisoning case in Telangana has reached a critical stage, with a London court set to decide on the extradition of the prime accused, UK-based pharmacist Ajith Kumar Mupparapu .

The extradition plea is being heard at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where the Crown Prosecution Service is representing the Indian government. Telangana Police have submitted key evidence and completed all legal formalities, and are now awaiting the verdict.

The case dates back to June 2023, when Ajith Kumar Mupparapu allegedly targeted his estranged wife Sirisha ’s family over personal disputes. During a wedding in Hyderabad, arsenic was allegedly mixed into food items through associates. Several family members fell seriously ill, and Sirisha ’s mother later died during treatment in July 2023. Medical tests subsequently confirmed arsenic poisoning.

Following a complaint, Miyapur police registered a case of murder, attempt to murder, and criminal conspiracy. Multiple accused were arrested, and a chargesheet was filed in June 2024. Ajith Kumar Mupparapu , who remained in the UK, was declared absconding, prompting authorities to issue a Red Corner Notice and initiate extradition proceedings.

During the London hearings, the defence opposed extradition citing lack of evidence and concerns over custodial conditions in India. In response, Indian authorities assured compliance with international standards and protection of legal rights.

Investigators say the accused’s return is crucial to uncover further details of the case, including the execution of the plan and involvement of others. A supplementary chargesheet may be filed based on fresh evidence.

With arguments concluded, the court’s decision is expected soon. If approved, Ajith Kumar Mupparapu could be brought to India to face trial, marking a key breakthrough in the case.
