Arsenal moved to the brink of a first Premier League title in 22 years after grinding out a tense 1-0 victory over Burnley on Monday in their penultimate league game of the season.

The win leaves Arsenal firmly in control of the title race and puts significant pressure on second-placed Manchester City, who must beat Bournemouth on Tuesday to keep the battle alive heading into the final weekend.

Arsenal can now secure their first league crown since 2004 with a victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday. The club’s last triumph came under legendary manager Arsene Wenger, when the famous “Invincibles” side completed the campaign unbeaten.

The match itself was far from comfortable for Arsenal despite dominating possession and controlling most of the play at the Emirates Stadium. Burnley, already relegated, defended in numbers and attempted to frustrate the hosts throughout the contest.

The decisive moment came in the 37th minute when Bukayo Saka delivered a dangerous corner that was headed home by Kai Havertz . The goal once again highlighted Arsenal’s strength from set-pieces, which has been a major feature of their campaign this season.

Havertz, making only his second league goal contribution after an injury-hit season, justified manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to start him ahead of Viktor Gyokeres.

The German forward, however, was fortunate to avoid a red card in the second half after a studs-up tackle on Lesley Ugochukwu. The referee showed only a yellow card, and VAR upheld the decision despite strong appeals from Burnley players.

Although Arsenal continued to create chances, they failed to score a second goal and had to survive nearly 10 minutes of stoppage time before sealing another crucial victory. Burnley rarely threatened, with Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya not required to make a single save.

Arteta’s side are also preparing for the UEFA Champions League Final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30, raising the possibility of a historic end to the season.
