Arsenal end year on top with emphatic 4-1 win over Aston Villa

Arsenal sent a clear title message on the final matchday of the year, dismantling high-flying Aston Villa 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium to ensure they end 2025 at the top of the Premier League. All four goals came in a blistering second half that underlined both the team’s depth and growing authority under manager Mikel Arteta.

After a tight first half, Arsenal exploded into life following the restart. The victory moved them five points clear of Manchester City, who play Sunderland on New Year’s Day, and six ahead of third-placed Villa, who arrived in London on an 11-match winning run across all competitions.

“It is a beautiful evening,” Arteta said afterward. “We knew how tough this game would be. The way we started the second half was amazing. We raised the level and were very efficient.”

Arsenal, chasing their first league title since 2004, looked every bit like genuine contenders as they overwhelmed one of the division’s most consistent sides this season.

The breakthrough arrived early in the second half when defender Gabriel Magalhães powered in a close-range header from a corner, continuing Arsenal’s strong record from set pieces. Villa protested, claiming Gabriel impeded goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, but the goal stood.

Just minutes later, midfielder Martín Zubimendi doubled the lead with a composed finish after captain Martin Ødegaard won possession in midfield and slipped a perfectly weighted pass behind the Villa defense.

United were also frustrated, drawing 1-1 at Old Trafford against bottom club Wolverhampton. Joshua Zirkzee’s deflected opener was cancelled out by Ladislav Krejcí’s powerful header, and a late United goal was ruled out for offside, prompting boos from home supporters.

Newcastle climbed to 10th with a 3-1 win at Burnley, Everton beat Nottingham Forest 2-0, and West Ham and Brighton shared a 2-2 draw.

As the year closes, Arsenal stand alone at the summit confident, convincing, and firmly in control of their title destiny heading into 2026.
