Arrests rise to 13 in J-K protest vandalism over student harassment

What began as a student-led outcry for justice in Sopore has now spiralled into a law and order challenge, with police intensifying their crackdown on those accused of hijacking the protest.

Authorities on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of five more individuals , taking the total number of people held to 13 , in connection with acts of vandalism during demonstrations triggered by an alleged sexual harassment case involving a girl student .

The protests erupted earlier this week after a senior lecturer at a government higher secondary school in Sopore was booked for allegedly sexually assaulting a female student . The incident sparked widespread anger among students, who took to the streets demanding swift and strict action.

However, officials say the situation took a troubling turn when miscreants allegedly infiltrated the peaceful protests, leading to damage of public property and disruption of order. Police highlighted night-long raids carried out to track down those involved.

While five arrests were made earlier, the latest detentions signal a continued effort by Sopore police to bring the situation under control. Authorities have also identified 13 more suspects , with search operations ongoing.

Police have made it clear that no one will be allowed to exploit a sensitive situation, warning that strict legal action awaits anyone found inciting violence or disorder. They also acknowledged the cooperation of local residents, urging citizens to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, the Education Department has placed the accused lecturer under suspension and initiated a departmental inquiry. A senior official has been assigned to investigate the case, with a report expected within 15 days.
