Army Wife’s Organ Donation Gives 14 Year Old Boy A Second Chance At Life
A powerful story of loss, courage and compassion unfolded between Haryana and Delhi, where a grieving Army family turned a personal tragedy into hope for another.
A 14-year-old boy suffering from end stage heart failure has been given a new lease of life after receiving a heart transplanted through a highly coordinated emergency operation involving multiple agencies and hospitals.
The donor was a 41-year-old woman, wife of a serving Indian Army officer , who was admitted to Command Hospital, Chandimandir in Panchkula after suffering a severe brain haemorrhage. Despite medical efforts, she was declared brain dead on May 2 .
In a deeply emotional yet courageous decision, her husband and their two young daughters agreed to donate her organs, transforming their grief into an act that saved multiple lives.
Her heart was allocated to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi , where a specialised transplant team immediately mobilised. The team flew on a chartered private aircraft to Chandigarh to retrieve the organ within the critical time window.
From there, a tightly coordinated operation ensured the heart reached Delhi swiftly. Haryana and Punjab traffic police, along with the Airports Authority of India in Chandigarh , facilitated priority clearance. In Delhi, a green corridor was created, allowing the organ to be transported from the airport to the hospital in around 20 minutes.
The transplant was performed successfully on the teenager, who had been battling deteriorating heart function for over a year and required frequent hospital admissions. Doctors confirmed that heart transplant was the only viable option to save his life . He had also been registered with NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) two months earlier.
Dr Mukesh Goel, senior consultant in cardiothoracic surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said the timely availability of a matching donor and seamless coordination made the life saving surgery possible.
The hospital also acknowledged the role of Colonel Anurag Garg of Command Hospital, Chandimandir , for his leadership in ensuring smooth coordination during the donation process.
The teenager is now stable and under close observation in the cardiac ICU, marking a powerful reminder of how one decision can light up multiple lives even in moments of profound grief.
