Army Leadership Revamp: New Chiefs appointed across key commands

The Indian Army on Wednesday witnessed a significant leadership transition , with new commanders taking charge of its Eastern, Western, and Southern Commands, alongside changes at the top level of military leadership.

Lieutenant General VMB Krishnan assumed office as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, succeeding Lt Gen R C Tiwari , who retired on March 31. Commissioned in 1988, Lt Gen Krishnan brings nearly four decades of operational experience , including command roles in the challenging Siachen Glacier and leadership of the elite Brahmastra Corps. He previously served as Quarter Master General at Army Headquarters, where he led key logistics and infrastructure reforms .

Simultaneously, Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh took over as head of the Western Command following the retirement of Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar . An officer of the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), Lt Gen Singh has extensive experience in high-altitude and sensitive border areas . He earlier served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff and Director General Operational Logistics, contributing significantly to force structuring and operational preparedness .

In the southern theatre, Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain assumed charge of the Southern Command, succeeding Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth , who has now taken over as Vice Chief of the Army Staff. A veteran officer of the MAHAR Regiment, Lt Gen Jain has held multiple command roles, including counter-insurgency operations and United Nations missions . Prior to this, he served as Chief of Staff at the Southern Command headquarters in Pune.

The reshuffle underscores the Army’s focus on operational readiness, technological integration, and troop welfare , aimed at strengthening preparedness and ensuring stability across critical regions.
