
ArcelorMittal announces 1 GW renewable push across three Indian states
Global steel major ArcelorMittal has announced plans to invest USD 0.9 billion in three new renewable energy projects in India, a move aimed at doubling its clean power capacity in the country and supporting greener steel production.
In a statement on Monday, the company said the projects will be set up in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat, with a combined capacity of about 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar and wind energy. Once completed, ArcelorMittal’s total renewable energy capacity in India will rise to 2 GW, while its global green energy portfolio will expand to 3.3 GW.
The power generated from these projects will be supplied to AMNS India, a Gujarat-based steel producer that is a 60:40 joint venture between Luxembourg-headquartered ArcelorMittal and Japan’s Nippon Steel. The clean energy push is part of the group’s broader strategy to cut carbon emissions and ensure a stable supply of renewable power for its steelmaking operations.
Detailing the projects, ArcelorMittal said a 36-megawatt (MW) solar plant will be developed in Amravati, Maharashtra, and is expected to be operational by the first half of 2027. In Rajasthan’s Bikaner, the company plans a 400-MW solar project combined with a 500-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system, targeted for completion by June 2028.
The third project will come up in Bachau, Gujarat, and will include 250 MW of wind power, 300 MW of solar capacity and 300 MWh of integrated battery storage. This project is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2028.
ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal said the expansion would strengthen the company’s clean energy footprint while providing reliable green power to its Indian operations. He added that the move underlines the group’s commitment to decarbonising steel production.
Separately, AMNS India is also developing its own 550-MW renewable project in Bachau, similar in scope to ArcelorMittal’s Gujarat plan. Together, ArcelorMittal’s existing 1-GW project and the new developments are expected to cut carbon emissions by up to 4 million tonnes and meet about 35 per cent of AMNS India’s electricity needs at its Hazira steel plant.
