Homegrown messaging app Arattai, developed by Zoho, has crossed 7.5 million downloads, emerging as one of the fastest-growing Indian alternatives to WhatsApp. The milestone comes amid a wave of support from government officials, business leaders and social media users promoting the “Made-in-India” movement.

According to Zoho, the app has recorded 7.5 million registrations across Google Play and Apple App Store as of October 3. The surge has been amplified by endorsements from ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw, Piyush Goyal and Dharmendra Pradhan, as well as industrialist Anand Mahindra, who said he downloaded the app “with pride.”

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu, now the company’s Chief Scientist, praised the Arattai team for working quietly for five years before the sudden breakout. “Allow neither praise nor criticism nor fame to distract you stay the course,” he wrote on X, adding that Arattai is powered by Zoho’s real-time messaging and AV frameworks perfected over 15 years.

Vembu said the app’s backend distributes workloads across servers for reliability, security and quick performance features that reflect Zoho’s long-term R&D focus.

However, analysts have also sounded a note of caution. India has seen several social-media startups surge on initial hype only to fade later notably the microblogging app Koo and short-video platforms such as Moj, Josh, Chingari and Roposo, which rose after the TikTok ban. Many of them struggled with user retention, monetisation and scalability once the early buzz wore off.

“Arattai’s momentum is impressive, but sustaining engagement and innovation will be the real test,” one industry observer said. “It’s too early to tell whether this will be a breakout social-media-cum-messaging success from India.”

As India continues to push for self-reliance in digital infrastructure, cyber security and AI, platforms like Arattai represent both promise and challenge — symbolising the ambition of a confident digital nation while reminding it that early success does not guarantee endurance.
