The Telangana government has invited applications for the Sri Konda Laxman Bapuji State-Level Awards – 2026 , an initiative aimed at recognising outstanding handloom artisans and designers across the state. The awards will be presented on National Handloom Day (August 7) by the Handlooms and Textiles Department. Announcing the programme, Commissioner Shailaja Ramaiyer highlighted the government’s commitment to honouring excellence and preserving Telangana’s rich weaving heritage.

Under the eligibility criteria, artisans must have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the handloom profession. Designers are eligible if they possess at least five years of experience in developing innovative textile designs. The awards seek to recognise individuals who demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship, creativity, and contributions that strengthen the handloom sector.

Eligible candidates must submit applications in the prescribed format to the Assistant Directors of Handlooms and Textiles at their respective district headquarters. The last date for submission is March 31, 2026 . Detailed guidelines and application forms are available on the department’s official website: handtex.telangana.gov.in .

Named after legendary Telangana leader and weavers’ champion Konda Laxman Bapuji , the awards were instituted to honour artisans who have preserved and promoted traditional weaving practices. Previous recipients have represented renowned textile traditions such as Pochampally Ikat, Gadwal, and Narayanpet sarees , which have earned national and international recognition.

Telangana’s handloom sector supports thousands of rural livelihoods and represents centuries-old craftsmanship rooted in cultural identity. By recognising master weavers and emerging designers, the state aims to boost morale within the weaving community, encourage innovation, and attract younger generations to the craft.

Officials believe the awards will provide renewed motivation to artisans while strengthening the sustainability and global visibility of Telangana’s handloom industry. The initiative reflects the government’s broader efforts to safeguard traditional skills while promoting modern design excellence in the evolving textile landscape.
