Apple’s hypertension detect feature launches in India, bringing preventive heart health to millions

Apple has launched its Hypertension Detect feature in India, bringing an important early-warning health tool to a country with one of the largest hypertension burdens in the world. Hypertension is the leading modifiable risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease, and it often develops silently. The arrival of this technology offers millions of Indians a chance to detect risks earlier and seek timely medical care.

The feature uses an advanced algorithm that runs quietly in the background for 30 days, measuring blood-flow patterns through Apple Watch sensors. If it detects consistent signs that may indicate hypertension, the user receives a notification encouraging them to consult a healthcare professional. While this does not serve as a diagnosis, it gives users an early alert for a condition that is typically discovered too late.

Worldwide, about 1.4 billion adults aged 30 to 79 have hypertension, according to the World Health Organization and GPHSA data. In India, estimates show that 188 to 220 million adults live with hypertension, as reported by Down To Earth, the World Health Organization, and SpringerLink. Because India has the second-largest population globally, the absolute number of people with hypertension is among the highest in the world, making accessible early-screening tools especially impactful.

Apple has begun expanding this feature globally, with availability confirmed in nearly 150 countries and regions. It is already active in the United States, several European nations, and major parts of Asia-Pacific. Regions across the Middle East, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, have also received the feature following regulatory approval. With India now added to this extensive list, Apple is widening access to preventive heart-health technology at a scale not previously seen in consumer devices.

By integrating hypertension detection directly into the Apple Watch, Apple is enabling millions of people, especially in high-risk regions, to monitor their cardiovascular health more proactively and catch warning signs that might otherwise go unnoticed.
