The growing use of smartphones in the digital age has emerged as a serious concern, particularly among young children. Responding to the increasing addiction to social media at a very early age, the Andhra Pradesh government is planning to introduce restrictions on its usage by children under 13 years .

Making the announcement in the State Assembly on Friday, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the government is working towards a policy aimed at protecting children from the negative impact of excessive online exposure.

Concerns Over Children’s Well-being

The Chief Minister noted that many children are spending long hours on platforms such as YouTube and Instagram , which is affecting their academic performance. Extended screen time is also leading to problems like poor eyesight and increased mental stress. He warned that exposure to inappropriate online content could misguide young minds and even threaten their safety. Emphasizing the need for collective responsibility, he said safeguarding the future of children must be a priority.

Discussions on Age Restriction

The government intends to introduce a clear legislation on the matter within the next 90 days . However, deliberations are underway on whether the restriction should apply to children under 13 years or be extended up to 16 years . Before taking a final decision, authorities will consult parents , educationists , and health experts . The final policy will be framed after considering public opinion and expert recommendations.

Inspired by Karnataka’s Move

Efforts to regulate children’s social media use are not unique to Andhra Pradesh. The neighboring state of Karnataka has already moved to restrict access for children under 16 years . With Andhra Pradesh considering a similar step, the issue has begun to attract national attention. Experts believe the initiative aims to ensure that children grow up in a healthier environment, focusing on physical activity and mental well-being rather than excessive engagement in the virtual world.
