In a significant step towards strengthening healthcare for students, the Andhra Pradesh coalition government has launched a new digital initiative aimed at improving the physical and mental well-being of school and college students across the state.

Aligned with the vision of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu , the government has developed a dedicated digital platform titled the ‘Andhra Pradesh School Health Wellness Programme’ (APSHWP) , specifically targeting adolescents aged 13 to 19 years . Describing it as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said the platform integrates technology with healthcare services , setting a new benchmark in student health management.

Noting that students often rely on social media and other unreliable sources for information on physical changes and personal issues, the government designed the portal ( apshwp.ap.gov.in ) to provide scientifically validated information directly to students . The platform emphasises a preventive approach rather than treatment after illness, aiming to create awareness on key health aspects.

The portal covers 11 major themes , including personal hygiene, nutrition, mental well-being, substance abuse risks , and road safety awareness . To ensure easy understanding, it offers 15-minute engaging video lessons in both Telugu and English , presented in a conversational format between two students.

Key topics such as menstrual health issues among girls, the adverse effects of excessive social media use , and internet safety are also addressed. Beyond informational content, the platform incorporates an e-learning model featuring quizzes, games, and online assessments . Students who successfully complete these assessments will be awarded certificates by the Health Department .

To ensure effective implementation at the grassroots level, the programme is being rolled out under the State Adolescent Health Programme , with special training for teachers . Educators from government high schools and junior colleges are being trained in the Digital Learning Management System to guide students effectively.

Health Department Commissioner Veerapandian stated that approximately 150 teachers per district have already been trained, expressing confidence that they will play a crucial role in mentoring students under this initiative.
