AP govt urges Centre to recognize Amaravati as capital, assures farmers of support

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu met with farmers from the capital region at the Secretariat’s Fifth Block on Friday, addressing their concerns and outlining the state government’s plans for Amaravati.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the state has already requested the central government to officially recognize Amaravati as the state capital and said further discussions with the Centre on the matter are planned. He also stated that the government would negotiate with the Centre to extend the deadline for capital gains benefits, ensuring farmers receive due support.

During the meeting, farmers shared their issues regarding land, infrastructure, and development plans. Responding, Chandrababu Naidu said, “Farmers’ opinions on land parcels, village areas, and basic amenities have been noted. Permission has been granted for pooling certain lands, and any remaining issues can first be discussed with the tripartite committee. I am ready to personally intervene if needed. From now on, the government will regularly review matters concerning Amaravati farmers.”

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of open communication with the farmers, stating, “We must speak candidly with farmers and ensure they understand our plans. Amaravati is the growth engine of the state, and its development must benefit the capital’s farmers first. Ensuring justice for Amaravati and its farmers is my responsibility. Land acquisitions under my tenure have always been smooth. Land prices are rising, and I advise farmers not to sell returnable plots hastily. We plan to develop a temple in Amaravati akin to Tirumala, while projects like Bits Pilani and Quantum Valley are coming up, along with an Aerospace City on 5,000 acres near Tirupati. Amaravati still has much potential for development, and we aim to acquire land for the second phase of pooling. Observing Hyderabad’s growth shows what these developments can achieve. Some farmers have requested increased FSI (Floor Space Index); this will be discussed before any decision is made. The government is committed to resolving all farmer concerns wherever possible, but unity is key - development is achievable only if everyone works together.”

Farmers expressed their support for the government’s plans, stating they have previously organized under Joint Action Committee (JAC)s for Amaravati’s development and will now form the Amaravati Development Association. They assured full cooperation for the second phase of land pooling, noting that clear explanations about FSI benefits and other aspects should come from Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA). They also acknowledged that misunderstandings could harm them financially if not addressed.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister Pemasani Chandrasekhar, State Minister Narayana, Tadikonda MLA, senior municipal officials, CRDA officers, and the Guntur District Collector.
